Philadelphia is a historic city filled with historic buildings, but Philadelphia City Council is considering legislation that could alter Philadelphia’s ability to protect these buildings by changing the way historic preservation works in the city, a group of community members and organizations have been pushing back, and have formed a stop demolishing Philly coalition. Winter is an abolitionist educator and organizer committed to historical reckoning in service of liberation. With a PhD in history from UCLA, their research and writing projects focus on exposing the roots of colonial infrastructures in Haiti, Philadelphia, and the Midwestern United States.

But social justice groups have also been holding events at those sites to call attention to the ugly truths behind some of the nation’s foundational stories.
