A New Jersey-based political activist with ties to Philadelphia is back in the United States after being detained by the Israeli military. He’d been part of the largest flotilla of civilian ships to date that is trying to challenge the Israeli naval blockade that prevents humanitarian aid from being delivered to residents of Gaza. Block by Block, reporter Dounya Ramadan traveled to New York on May 24th with other Philadelphians to welcome him home, and brings us this story.

Dounya Ramadan is a Muslim Libyan-American, Delaware born-and-raised, Philly-based community advocate/organizer in local intersectional/international justice spaces, ranging from advocacy for Palestinian liberation to immigrant rights advocacy and beyond. She also works as an immigration paralegal at a Philly immigration law firm striving to keep families in our community together every day.
As a Spanish, Arabic and English speaker, she is passionate about utilizing her language proficiency to bridge linguistically diverse worlds in every space she is in, and she is always up for learning a new language. Dounya is also an avid traveler looking forward to bridging local and global perspectives/stories from the connections/relationships she has formed with locals throughout her travels, and exploring them in radio/multimedia forms of journalism through this fellowship.
Dounya dabbles in photography, comedy, acting/singing, and filmmaking whenever she’s inspired as well, and she loves the outdoors/adventure.
